Guns & Ammo writer Wiley Clapp stated that “Proper selection of a home defense shotgun and effective ammunition, combined with training, give the defensive shooter one of the most devastating firearms possible.”
And by devastating, we do mean devastating. When you aim a shotgun at an armed intruder in your home, you are ultimately going for “terminal effectiveness”, as Clapp puts it. This is because a centered hit on any individual with a shotgun will cause many (if not all) of the pellets to strike vital areas.
Nevertheless, Clapp stands by the shotgun as an excellent choice of armament for use in home, camp or ranch defense–just about anywhere concealment is not an issue.
His recommendation for home defense? A short-barreled (18-inch), 12-gauge with double-ought pellets because it handles better in confined spaces like hallways. And don’t forget the buttstock!
