Kristin Larson, Lead Instructor at Prime Defense, explains the importance of being aware of your surroundings and gives two tips to increase your self-defense awareness in the YouTube video ‘Beyond the Gun’:
- Put your phone away and look around. In doing so, you may notice something suspicious or “out-of-place” in your surroundings that you otherwise would’ve missed. Additionally, Larson states that being aware can lower the chances of you being targeted by an assailant.
- Awareness may be important, but it doesn’t always work. Larson comments that when your awareness is directed in one area, you leave yourself vulnerable in others. It’s not if, but when you are caught off-guard, you need to be prepared for that moment.

When you become more aware of your surroundings, you give yourself more time to handle dangerous situations or can prevent certain situations from occurring. This also applies to driving situations. When it comes to security driving, you always want to be aware of vehicles in front, behind, and to the sides. Pay attention to the occupants and vary your travel routes and times.
