Training Staff

Lee Chewey

Lee is retired from the U.S. Army with 22 years of service. His career focused on two areas with extensive training and experience in both Military Intelligence and Special Operations. He continued working in security operations and training after retiring from the military and has served in security operations management in Algeria and the Marshall Islands. Lee served several years as a program manager for companies holding contracts to provide security operations and training all around the world.  He served as branch chief and division chief of the Advanced Law Enforcement Training Division, U. S. Army Military Police Corp., Fort Leonard Wood, MO. The division provided 19 specialty courses to all branches of U. S. Military including counter-terrorism and counter-drug training to selected law enforcement agencies in High Intensity Drug Areas (HIDA). Lee has been with BSR twice; initially for four years from 86 to 90 and rejoined the company in December 2006. He currently serves as a Vice President and the Director of Training.

J. Chris Otto

Chris is a retired U.S. Army Military Policeman with more than 20 years of Law Enforcement experience. He worked as a U.S. Army Military Police School (USAMPS) Certified Instructor and subject matter expert in Protective Services Operations and High-Threat Security Driving. Chris has conducted Protective Services missions throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa encompassing more than 50 countries to include Iraq and Afghanistan. He has extensive firearms training in handgun, shotgun, submachine gun, and carbine and has completed instructor and armorer certification courses through Hecklor &Koch, SIG SAUER and the National Rifle Association. Chris began instructing at BSR in 2008 and is currently the Deputy Director of Training.

Guy Frank

Guy is a retired Air Traffic Controller after 31 years of service. He has been involved in amateur racing with the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the Formula Race Car Club of America (FRCCA) since 1999. He currently manages the Friday at the Track (FATT) program for BSR. Guy began instructing at BSR in 2008.

Chuck Fuller

Chuck served in the U.S. Marine Corps assigned to the Marine Corps Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team (F.A.S.T) with over 15 years of Military, Public safety and Protective Security service experience. He recently completed a 2 year assignment as a Protective Security Specialist in Iraq on a Department of State Worldwide Personal Protective Service’s (WPPS) contract. Prior to this he was assigned to the Afghanistan Poppy Eradication Force under the US Department of State, International Narcotics and Law Enforcement (INL). Chuck is a US State Department, and NRA Law Enforcement certified firearms instructor for handgun, shotgun, submachine gun, machine gun and carbine.

David Van Diest

David has Auto Crossed regularly since 1990 as well as participated in several open road rally races to include; the Silver State Classic, the Nevada Open Road Challenge and the Gold Rush Challenge.  He has instructed at events for Ford SVT Owners Group, Volkswagen, Track Daze, Ferrari/Maserati of D.C., Corvette Clubs, and Friday at the Track. David has also competed in events at Pikes Peak International Raceway and Second Creek Raceway. David has been a BSR instructor since July of 2006.

John Woodill

John is a U.S. Navy Submarine veteran of six years. He retired from the Fairfax County Police Department with 28 years of service. John spent 20 years as a Patrol Officer, 25 years as a Field Training Instructor as well as 15 years as an Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor. He has devoted his time to improve the lives of all drivers by being a Virginia Driver Education Instructor since 1994. John has been a BSR Instructor since 1992.

Don Ruschman

Don joined BSR in 2001 and is a senior class-room and in-car Instructor, with significant experience teaching virtually every driving course in the BSR catalog.  Don is also a US State Department/USAID contractor/consultant and a sports car and motorcycle racer.  He has more than 25 years of experience operating in difficult overseas environments on both short and long term assignments in the developing countries of Southeast Asia, North Africa, the Middle-East, and in the Former Soviet Union.  Son of an auto industry executive, he grew up with motorsports and first began racing motorcycles in High School.  More recently, he races Porsches in NASA’s Mid-Atlantic region where he was the 44 SuperCup champion in 2008, and currently holds track records at New Jersey Motorsports Park and Summit Point. 

Doug Miller

Doug is retired from the U.S. Army with 30 years of service. His last duty position found him stationed at the Pentagon where he served as a Security Driver for the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and the Secretary of the Army. Doug has served over 15 years overseas during his career, working both as Security Driver for the top military positions in Europe in addition to assignments to Infantry and Cavalry units. During his later European assignments, he specialized in armored vehicle and motorcade operations in some of the most arduous European traffic. Doug deployed for Operation Iraqi Freedom I-II as the Operations Sergeant (Truck master) for a transportation company, running critical supply convoys into all areas of Iraq. Doug has been instructing for BSR since 2009.

Preston Stempler

Preston is currently a commercial airline pilot and flight instructor. He serves as a volunteer fire fighter chief for a local Virginia community. He has an extensive background in Rally Racing and has been competing for over 15 years. Preston joined the BSR staff in 2004.

John Brown

John is a former U.S. Army Pilot (Chief Warrant Officer) for both fixed and rotary winged aircraft. He is currently an automotive technician and machinist building and crewing race cars. He is also a driving instructor for the local Porsche and Mercedes sports car clubs. John began instructing at BSR in 2007.

Al Bigler

Al is a retired Department of State Diplomatic Security Agent. He has over 40 years of planning, developing and implementing programs for personal protection of personnel and facilities. He has extensive experience as an instructor for Middle East cultural awareness, surveillance detection/attack recognition and progressive surveillance detection. Al started instructing at BSR in 2006.

Chris White

Chris has been an avid car racer since he received his license in the mid 1980’s. He started out on the drag racing strip in formula cars. Since then he has raced on the amateur circuit with the Mazda Sports Car Club of America (SCCA), Mercedes and Ferrari clubs. Chris has been a BSR instructor since 2005.  

Steve Cox

Steve is a 10 year veteran Police Officer from West Virginia, and a Graduate of the Charleston, West Virginia 6th Basic Police Academy. Steve started serving the public at the age of 15 when he became a Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff's Department Cadet. He has an extensive training and experience background in general Law Enforcement, firearms, tactical/swat operations, investigations and Security/patrol driving. Steve has been instructing at BSR since 2007.

Brian Billey

Brian is an avid amateur race car driver. He specializes in 12+ hour endurance racing events and has won several 1st place titles. He is also a driving instructor for many sport car racing clubs in the local area to include Sports Car Club of America, National Automobile Sports Association and the Mid-Atlantic Road Racer Sports. Brian joined the BSR instructional staff in 2006.

Randy Dorsey

Randy served in the Marine Corps for four years. He served with the Frederick County, Virginia Sheriff’s Office for more than 15 years. He worked several different jobs from a Correctional Officer, Sergeant Shift Supervisor, Community Response SWAT Team member to a lead instructor at the Frederick County Law Enforcement Academy. Since then Randy has worked on Diplomatic Security Protective details domestically and overseas with the company Blackwater. He currently owns and directs his own World Wide Protection Security Company. Randy joined the BSR instructor staff in 2008.  

Steve Gums

Steve has been in the movie production business for over 20 years and has been a professional stunt coordinator and stunt driver on multiple national and international films, TV shows and commercials. Over the years outside of the film industry he has worked, in an instructor capacity, for many agencies. Some of these include Fairfax Fire & Rescue, FBI, Criminal Justice Academies and American University in Washington DC. He currently is working for a World Wide Protection Security Company and has over 4 years as an instructor, course designer and Security Agent. Steve has been instructing at BSR since 2008.

Greg Haas

Greg Haas has been active at Summit Point Motorsports Park since 1982. His driving experience includes autocross, enduro karts, spec racing, formula cars and improved touring. Greg has been instructing at BSR since 2010.

Pete Gochman

Pete has extensive in-car and class room instructing experience and is an HPDE Instructor with NASA, SCCA, GWS Mercedes, Audi ACNA, BMW Del Val, Ferrari Club of America, MVP Track Time LLC, Ford SVTOA, Mazda Drivers LLC, S2ki, Track Daze, Corvette Club NVCC, Red Line Time Attack, and the Capital Area Cobra Club.  He got involved in auto X in 2003 and later went on to win many auto X FTDs/trophies including a season championship in 2007 driving an A-Stock S2000. Pete has been instructing for the Summit Point FATT program since 2008 and became a BSR instructor in 2011.

Jim Roberts

Jim began auto crossing in 1994 and then moved on to high speed, track days. Time Trials, and racing.  He joined BSR as a FATT instructor in 2005 and also instructs with several other organizations including the National Corvette Museum.  Jim has instructed at many of the tracks in the Northeast, and is also a club racer with competition licenses in SCCA and NASA.  For the last three years he has competed in the “Brock Yates”, One Lap of America event which is a combination Time Trial and Endurance competition that visits tracks all over the country logging over 5,000 miles in just over a week each year. Jim began instructing at BSR in 2011.
